Cleantech for UK Welcomes £22bn CCUS and Hydrogen Funding But Urges Focus on Innovation

October 4, 2024

Today, the Government announced £22 billion of funding to be directed towards CCUS and blue hydrogen plants. This is a positive step in delivering a productive UK carbon capture market.

At the same time, it is vital that pledges are backed up with action and disbursed funds, and that priority is given, not only to mature sectors and carbon capture technologies, but also to innovative solutions that wholly design carbon emissions out of industrial processes.

“The UK is a global innovation leader. By working closely with the cleantech community, Government can ensure that public investments effectively deliver on our country’s clean energy ambitions.”

- Sarah Mackintosh, Director, Cleantech for UK

Cleantech for UK encourages greater transparency in the allocation of funds and calls for a balanced approach between established players and innovative startups. The focus should be on scalable, long-term solutions that advance both economic and environmental goals.

“While CCUS and hydrogen are vital, prioritising investment in nascent cleantech innovation can unlock additional underexplored opportunities for low-emissions economic growth all across the UK. "
